"That's how my mom did it, and I grew up knowing that," said Rumer.
Rumer Willis is following her mother's path as she gets ready to give birth to her first child with boyfriend Derek Richard Thomas. Rumer, Bruce Willis, and Demi Moore's daughter is sharing with her followers her birthing strategy, Entertainment Tonight reports. "I think it was always my plan to do it unmedicated. That's how my mom did it, and I grew up knowing that. That was always just a part of what I wanted to create. But I think it's so individual," the actress told PEOPLE.
Rumer wants to follow in her mom's footsteps, adding that she ideally wants a home birth. "The biggest lesson I've learned so far, during this transition to motherhood, is about surrender so ideally, I'm planning for a home birth, but if at any point someone was like, 'It's a little risky, or maybe not,' then I'd be like, 'cool, let's adapt and change'," she added.
Demi, 60, discussed giving birth to her children naturally and her desire to "feel every sensation" in her autobiography, Inside Out. Rumer, Tallulah, and Scout were all birthed at home by Moore, who claimed in her autobiography that she had to change physicians to find one who would support her birth plan and refrain from prescribing painkillers. The Ghost star recalled giving birth to Rumer, writing, "I wanted the exact opposite experience to the one my mom had: I wanted to feel every sensation, to be completely present and conscious for every moment of the delivery, no matter how painful."
When Rumer was asked if she was someone who was terrified of the process or calm, she said, "I want to know everything. I have all the things. I'm reading all the books. I'm actually training to be a doula right now too. I've always been a bit of a birth junkie and I think it's amazing. You can literally create a life from scratch. It's such an incredible privilege and this wild thing that your body knows exactly what to do."
Rumer, who revealed she "always wanted to be a mom," first announced her pregnancy back in December through an adorable Instagram carousel post. In the first picture, the expectant father was seen giving Rumer's growing tummy a sweet kiss, wrapping his hand around it while Rumer grinned. In the second picture, she was positioned next to a window, displaying her growing baby bump. The collection of photos was completed with a picture of a grinning Thomas, who looked very excited to become a father.
