Sarah Ferguson will continue to support King Charles III and Queen-Consort Camilla as the royals prepare to celebrate the upcoming coronations on May 6. Sarah, the Duchess of York (also known as Fergie), spoke directly to PEOPLE. "I'm very supportive of the King and the Queen Consort, and I really am glad to do whatever it takes to support them on their road ahead," says the 63-year-old Duchess.

Regarding the ceremonial fervor surrounding the coronation, she added, "I think it's very British, and it's very exciting. I love the institution of monarchy, and I believe in upholding the institution."

The Duchess, who sees the Late Queen Elizabeth II as her ultimate role model, will undoubtedly bring memories of the monarch to the ceremony. "She was so brilliant at putting you at ease. She had the most incredible faith of any single person I've ever met. She just knew what to do," she said of her late mother-in-law and monarch. "She knew how to make people feel good. She never took it on board as about her. It's about the monarchy, about making someone feel good. She was my total idol," she added, in appreciation of the second longest-ruling monarch.

The Duchess was given custody of the Queen's corgis, Sandy and Muick, after her passing in September. Ferguson claims that she would discuss the canines with the Queen if she could talk to her today. "If I was to talk to her today, I would tell her about the magnolia trees in the garden, because she loved that, and the primroses on the banks of Windsor, and the snowdrops. She would love that her doggies were walking wherever she walked before," she said.

She also discussed her second historical fiction book, A Most Intriguing Lady, which will be released on March 7, where the Duchess examines the subject of "invisible women" in history. For this book, she added a detective element. "I see everything as a wonderful sort of curiosity, and whodunit really, that's because I'm heavily into romance, and I love historical romance. I cry at Hallmark, you know? Just mentioning Hallmark, I could cry. I love romance, and I love the beauty of love and joy and magic," she said to PEOPLE.

"I believe that Lady Mary [the real-life heroine of her new book], she's so me and I really have explored a whole different side of me through Lady Mary. And so now I don't worry about someone saying 'Oh, are you Lady Mary?' My answer is yes, you know?" she added.
