Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. are celebrating two decades of togetherness!
The pair posted tributes on social media on September 1, 2022, by sharing photographs from their 2002 wedding, along with a few recent pictures of the two of them. The vintage-style image from their wedding shows Prinze kissing Gellar's hand, who wore a strapless gown with a simple hairdo for the occasion, reports PEOPLE.
Geller also uploaded several photographs with Prinze on her Instagram story. In one of the pictures, he has his arm around her while she looks at him with eyes full of love. Several images showed Prinze's appearance on Howard Stern's broadcast, just before the couple's wedding. The shock jock asked Prinze at the time, "So you're going to marry Sarah Michelle Gellar, even though you know that won't last?." Prinze replied, "Oh, absolutely it will last."
On the day of their anniversary, Gellar tagged Stern, 68, and asked, "What do you think? I think you owe us." Prinze shared Gellar's post on his Instagram Story and wrote, "She will not forget."
However, Gellar did forget their anniversary date in 2021. News outlets and friends reminded her of it and she wrote on Instagram, "I honestly thought it was tomorrow."
"Happy anniversary @realfreddieprinze today, tomorrow and any day after that I think might be our anniversary in the future," she further added. The She's All That star then wrote in the comments, "I'm sticking with tomorrow. I don't care what they said."
The couple met on the set of the 1997 horror thriller I Know What You Did Last Summer, where they instantly formed a connection.
"We just would talk about life and stuff like that, and we had completely different philosophies on just about everything," Prinze told US Weekly in February 2020. The connection was also sparked by the actor's desire to cook for Gellar because he felt she was "too skinny" at the time.
He said, "So, we started this weekly barbecue thing at her house, and me and my cousins would come over and cook food for her and her friends. And then we’d make sure everybody ate, and that was kind of how our friendship began."
After an accidental dinner date in January 2000, their relationship soon turned romantic. "We were supposed to have dinner with a friend of ours, and she didn’t make her plane, so we went anyway. We’d had tons of dinners before and for some reason, it felt different that night. Organically, it just transitioned into something else," Prinze recalled.
"I didn't go on dates with other girls, nor did I even want to pursue dates with other girls. One day, I just knew we're going to get married and that I was going to propose. I didn't know when or how," he told PEOPLE in March 2021.
The couple got married in a simple ceremony in Mexico in September 2002. The lovebirds reunited onscreen the following year to play Fred and Daphne in Scooby-Doo, roles they eventually reprised for the 2004 sequel as well. They are now a happy family of four, along with their two children, daughter Charlotte, 11, and son Rocky, 9.
