From not being able to communicate verbally to still going out on fun and romantic dates, Sean Connery and his wife are certainly beating the marriage game.
The name is Bond, James Bond. Sean Connery certainly imbibed a bit of his on-screen persona with his rogue charm and dashing looks. Men wanted to be him and women wanted to be with him, but there was only one woman who held the key to his heart — his wife of 45 years, Micheline Roquebrune Connery. And he is still head over heels in love with her.
The couple first met in 1970 at a golf tournament in Morocco, where their eyes met across the dinner table. The now 89-year-old actor called the French-Moroccan painter "ma cherie" in his sexy Scottish tongue, according to The Sun. But as much as the sparks flew and the setting was much like a scene from a Hollywood film, their story wasn't a fairytale one.
At the time that they had met, Micheline had already been married twice and had three kids, while Connery had by then split from his first wife, actress Diane Cilento. Of course, that didn't stop them from feeling an almost immediate and intense connection. Micheline told The Sun, “I saw this man from the back, and of course, he had a fine physique. But that first day I didn’t know who he was or anything about him. Then I dreamed I saw this man. I was in his arms. And I thought ‘At last, peace’. The next day I went back to the tournament and that was that!”
But after the tournament, the two returned to their respective partners. Until one day, two years later, Micheline received a message from Sean to meet him in Marbella, a small coastal town in Spain, according to Heavy. At first, Micheline balked at his gall, "[I think to myself] ‘Who does he think he is?’ … " But once she was there, "he locks his eyes on mine and says, ‘I’ve missed you … I can’t stop thinking about you and I can’t forget you.'”
And language was no barrier for the two of them. Where Sean knew barely a lick of French and Micheline, English, it seemed near impossible that it would work out for them. But when you ask them, the French painter says that they had "no problem communicating — body language!”
But their connection was even deeper than that, so much so that Sean actually recognized her from her feet! During that time, it was not easy for them to meet, what with her living in North Africa and him in Hollywood. He told the news outlet, "In the early days, it was difficult for us to see each other. She was still living in North Africa with her children. We were in separate queues coming off different flights. There was a partition and underneath I saw these feet. I immediately recognized them and tried to get through to see her."
So he battled his way through the crowd, not an easy task given his hordes of fans and other passengers, and managed to wait for her at the other end of the line. Recalling that, the 90-year-old world-renowned painter laughed and said, “I’m so glad because if I had arrived at an empty apartment that would have been it finished!”
Soon enough, in 1975, the two exchanged their vows, promising to be there for one another. And in the 1990's, they moved full time to live in the Bahamas. Now, in 2019, the couple still enjoys each other's company and even make it a point to go out on dates. In fact, according to The Daily Mail, in 2014, the couple were spotted looking lingerie while out on a date together and cozying up during a meal. Looks like the love that brought them together has stood against the test of time.
As Sean Connery says, “Micheline is an amazing woman. She is the love of my life.” Well, here's to more romantic dates as they enjoy being with each other.
