The couple had been spotted together first in 2016 but had been in an on and off relationship until earlier this year.
There is no telling who we will fall in love with, especially when it comes to age. In Hollywood, people divided by multiple decades don't see the year they were born in or their partner was born in as a hindrance. People fall in love when they share feelings and values together. They are on the same page, are vulnerable, and honest towards each other. All of this and more makes a good marriage, something Sean Penn, who has been married twice previously, likely knows about.
Penn and his girlfriend, Leila George, 28, tied the knot during the lockdown. The Oscar-winning actor, who is turning 60 end of August, tied the knot on July 30 with George, who is the daughter of Greta Scacchi, 60, and Vincent D'Onofrio, 61. George's mother and Penn were born the same year while her father was born one year before Penn.
One can imagine that family events might be a little awkward at times.
"Leila has been in Sean’s life for a while. They got together and then they broke up, and Sean won her back," a source told People. "He realized he had made a mistake and when he felt he might lose her, he worked hard to get her back," they said.
The couple had been linked since 2016 but their relationship had mostly been on and off until they got reunited earlier this year. The Mystic River actor broke up from fiancee Charlize Theron in June 2015. They were together for almost a year and a half. He was previously married to Robin Wright from 1996 to 2010, and Madonna from 1985 to 1989. Penn also has a child older than his current wife. He and Wright have two children together, Dylan, 29, and Hopper, 26.
Penn and George had been self-isolating during the lockdown and spending the time together made them closer. "They got back together during COVID and became really close and got engaged a few months ago, early during quarantine," explained the source.
The Dead Man Walking actor also confirmed that he got married on Late Night with Seth Meyers. The actor called it a "Covid wedding" and said that it was held via Zoom. "We did a COVID wedding," Penn told Meyers, as quoted by LATimes. "By that I mean it was a county commissioner on Zoom and we were at the house [with] my two children and her brother, and we did it that way."
The news about their wedding got out when philanthropist Irena Medavoy posted a since-deleted Instagram post congratulating the pair, according to Vanity Fair. She wrote in the caption, "We are so happy for @leilageorge #seanpenn getting married. We love you. We are over the moon to [see you] find your soulmate true partner. You are meant to be together. God Bless you both and the family you have joined. Introducing the Penn’s #marriage."
The couple has not made many appearances this year but in March, Penn and George made a rare appearance while attending a fundraiser the actress produced for wildlife relief in Australia after the bushfires. "It’s the most important thing [to have his support]. I wouldn’t be here smiling today if it wasn’t for him," George told People at the event.
George doesn't have many acting credits under her belt. However, she has worked on the TV film Mother, May I Sleep with Danger? and 2019 action film The Kid, which was directed by her father Vincent D'Onofrio. Her mother Greta Scacchi is an Australian American actress who became popular with her work on White Mischief (1987), Presumed Innocent (1990), The Player (1992), Emma (1996), and Looking for Alibrandi (2000). It is not known how her parents feel about her new husband.
