"Barcelona, the city where I learned that friendship is certainly longer than love," the singer wrote.
Shakira is prepared to start over in Miami with her children after a painful split. The singer took to Instagram on April 2 to open up about leaving Barcelona, where she previously lived with her ex-partner, Gerard Pique, raising their two boys Sasha, 8, and Milan, 10. In the caption written in Spanish, the 46-year-old Colombian singer said goodbye to the city where she spent the last eight years, as she's all set for her move to Miami.
"I settled in Barcelona to give my children stability, the same we are now looking for in another corner of the world next to family, friends, and the sea. Today we start a new chapter in the pursuit of their happiness," the Hips Don't Lie singer wrote.
"Thank you to everyone who surfed alongside my many waves there in Barcelona, the city where I learned that friendship is certainly longer than love," she expressed about Barcelona, per PEOPLE. "Thank you to everyone who has been there to cheer me up, dried my tears, inspired me, and made me grow. Thank you to my Spanish audience who have always wrapped me in their love and loyalty. For you, just a see you later, and as my father said so many times, see you around the curves," the singer added, expressing gratitude to her fans and supporters.
An insider first indicated to PEOPLE that relocation was in progress in November. "For eight years they have been living in Barcelona, but she and the kids are moving to Miami, where all her maternal family lives," the insider shared. The source shared that the two signed an agreement that is "best for their kids."
Early in June 2022, Pique and Shakira made their separation public. The former couple got together while filming the music video for her song, Waka Waka (This Time for Africa), which acted as the FIFA World Cup 2010's anthem. "We regret to confirm that we are separating," they shared in a joint statement. "We ask for privacy at this moment for the well-being of our children, who are our maximum priority. Thank you in advance for your understanding and respect," they added.
The singer described the relationship ending as "the darkest hours of my life" in a September interview with Elle, adding that music had helped her get through it. "I've remained quiet and just tried to process it all," she said. "It's hard to talk about it, especially because I'm still going through it, and because I'm in the public eye."
