After a break of 15 years from the world of music, Shania Twain released her new album, Now in 2017 and her fans seem to be as smitten by her charm as they were over a decade ago. She says the song Life’s About to Get Good from her album Now is inspired by the ups and downs she experienced in these years and it chronicles her brave journey towards recovery and independence.

She appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show as recently as March 12, 2020, and talked about her divorce, throat surgery, and how she recovered from the back to back blows of her life. "After divorce, it’s a sever of so many things,” Twain told Clarkson. “You have to find and rediscover your independence. So this was an exercise of independence. It was great therapy and also because my ex-husband was my producer and co-writer. It was this huge oh my God, every element of my life, parenting, songwriting, record-making, partnership… I was now alone in all of that.”

Twain has been open about her struggles with losing the love of her life, her husband Mutt Lange and how it had rendered her lonely and shattered. She had also revealed, that in a particularly weak moment she had emailed her ex-husband's girlfriend, who was also her best friend, begging her to return her man. "I am dying, and I can't take it anymore. This is killing me. Have mercy," she had written.

As broken as she was from her husband's infidelity and subsequent divorce, Shania Twain started taking baby steps towards a brighter future. In fact, after her marriage with Frederic Thiebaud she had confessed,  "I genuinely believe everything happens for a reason, so how can there be any room for regrets?" MailOnline quoted her.

But life was not done throwing challenges at the That Don't Impress Me hitmaker. She was diagnosed with Lyme disease which had affected her vocal cords, to make matters more serious she had to go through an open throat surgery. This in a way compromised her golden voice, Cheatsheet confirmed.

“I’d lost my voice,” Twain said. “I had to start over with my voice. I got Lyme disease at the end of the Up tour. The vocal chord nerves were damaged each side. I had to get an open throat surgery. The chords are fine but they just don’t have the strings. The nerves are just weak. They don’t flow symmetrically which is an absolute nightmare for a singer. So I had to literally start over.”

Explaining her song Life’s About to Get Good, Twain said that it was her effort towards kickstarting her life with everything that she had. “I didn’t love life during that period, I have to say,” Twain said. “This is why ‘Life’s About to Get Good,’ I was like okay, come on. You’ve got to pick yourself up. You’ve got to find a way to carry on. You’re in this ‘I’m never going to love again, I’m never going to marry again.’ I just felt like I had to start from zero on so many levels.”

So to find her own hope, Twain did what she knows best.  She wrote and sang. “I needed to do something that was really super independent musically and creatively,” Twain said. “A song like Life’s About to Get Good, it’s all about optimism and looking forward to what’s next. The whole thing was a reminder that I can do this on my own.”

While we wish that she should not have felt the pain that she went through; seeing her come out stronger on the other side is inspiring. Even after losing the two things she loved the most, her marriage and voice, which basically took her back to square one; she had the courage to love a man again and make music again.

It is also very courageous of her to come out and talk about her pain in order to heal herself and inspire others. The most awe-inspiring thing, however, is that the singer has not lost the zest to live her life and with a smile on her face she can still say, "I’ve just been living my best life right now.”

“The voice has been a real triumph experience,” Twain said. “Everything has been. Love has been. Parenting has been an absolute joy. I’ve just been living my best life right now.”

Twain also revealed what her motto of living life is. What is the one thing that keeps her going through everything? “‘You’ve got to survive to tell the story so the hunter doesn’t get the glory,’” Twain said. “Whatever it is that’s pounced on you or is challenging you or weighing you down. You can’t let it win. You have to survive and then it’s so important to tell the story. I just believe that’s a great motto.”
