Sonya Eddy, who played Nurse Epiphany Johnson in ABC's General Hospital, passed away at age 55. In an Instagram post on Tuesday, actress Octavia Spencer from Mom shared the sad news of the passing of a close friend. "My friend @sonyaeddy passed away last night," Spencer captioned a headshot of Eddy, with an emotional tribute. "The world lost another creative angel. Her legions of @generalhospitalabc fans will miss her. My thoughts and prayers are with her loved ones, friends, and fans!"
Eddy was most well-known for her work starring in General Hospital as Epiphany Johnson. Beginning in 2006, she played the nurse, who doubled as Stan Johnson's fictional mother and was loved for the role by fans across the globe. On October 20, Eddy's final episode in the role of the nurse aired.
A cause of death has not yet been revealed, but colleagues of the actor from her wide-spanning career are paying tributes to her. Frank Valentini, the executive producer of General Hospital, got extremely emotional in a heartfelt statement to PEOPLE on Eddy's passing. "I am heartbroken about the loss of the incredible Sonya Eddy. I truly loved her not only as an actress but as a friend. The lights in the hub of the nurse's station will now be a little dimmer, but her spirit and light will live on in both the show and our set. On behalf of the entire GH cast and crew, we send our deepest sympathy to her family, friends, and fans. She will be very missed."
The actress owned Eddy Ford Entertainment along with Tyler Ford. In a statement, he told The Hollywood Reporter, “It with the heaviest heart that I have to announce the sudden passing of my business partner, creative soulmate, and best friend Sonya Eddy. She left an indelible imprint in every person that she touched, through the screen and off.”
With a career that spanned both film and television, Eddy had appearances in several other television shows and movies in addition to General Hospital, such as Inspector Gadget, Barbershop, Daddy Daycare, Matchstick Men, Bad News Bears, Seven Pounds, The Perfect Game, and Pee-Big Wee's Holiday. Most recently, the movies Frank and Penelope, V/H/S/99, and Satanic Hispanics were among her 2022 endeavors.
The family wants well-wishers who want to aid the family to send their donations sent to The Foundation of the National Student Nurses Association Inc. in memory of Eddy, per Variety.
