Legendary musician Stevie Nicks is mourning the loss of her best friend and bandmate Christine McVie. Fleetwood Mac's singer, songwriter and keyboard player died on Wednesday after a brief illness at age 79. "A few hours ago I was told that my best friend in the whole world since the first day of 1975, had passed away," Nicks wrote in a handwritten note shared online. "I didn't even know she was ill... until late Saturday night." Alongside a recent photo of the two, the Edge of Seventeen singer wrote that she wanted to fly to London to be by her side after learning about her illness.

Nicks wrote: "I wanted to be in London; I wanted to get to London — but we were told to wait. So, since Saturday, one song has been swirling around in my head, over and over and over. I thought I might possibly get to sing it to her, and so, I'm singing it to her now. I always knew I would need these words one day."

The 74-year-old then included the lyrics to the third verse of the Haim song Hallelujah, which starts with, "I had a best friend but she has come to pass. One I wish I could see now." Nicks signed the note, "See you on the other side, my love, don't forget me, Always Stevie."

Drummer Mick Fleetwood also paid tribute to his late "sweet friend." The 75-year-old rocker wrote: "This is a day where my dear sweet Friend Christine McVie has taken flight.. and left us earthbound folks to listen with bated breath to the sounds of that songbird... reminding one and all that love is all around us to reach for and touch in this precious life that is gifted to us." Fleetwood, who co-founded the group in 1967, added, "Part of my heart has flown away today... I will miss everything about you, Christine McVie. Memories abound... They fly to me."

Fleetwood co-founded the group in 1967. McVie's then-husband John McVie—who was on the bass—was also one of the co-founders of the famous band. After that McVie joined in 1970 and Nicks joined in 1975 with then-boyfriend Lindsey Buckingham, according to PEOPLE.  McVie sang on more of the group's hits than Nicks or Buckingham and sang in classics like Don't Stop, Everywhere and You Make Loving Fun. McVie has won two Grammy awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, according to Good Morning America.
