Nicole Kidman Was Barred From Attending Son Connor's Wedding by Tom Cruise | He Didn't "Want Her There"

Kidman's relationship with her kids suffered not only because of her divorce from Cruise but his association with the Church of Scientology as well.

Tom Cruise with his handsome looks and charming personality could make anyone fall for him instantly. But in the year 1989, the Mission: Impossible star fell for the fiery-haired actress Nicole Kidman, who was playing the female lead in an Australian thriller Dead Calm.

According to The Daily Beast, Cruise was so infatuated with the little known Australian actress that he convinced producers to cast her as his love interest in Days of Thunder. His marriage to his then-wife Mimi Rogers didn't make any difference to his attraction towards Kidman.

Before tying the knot with Kidman, Cruise, a devout Scientologist sent the divorce papers to Rogers through two Scientologists. She was the one who had introduced the actor to The Church of Scientology.

Cruise and Kidman's wedding was one of the most talked-about subjects in Hollywood. They were a power couple in front of the world but Cruise's association with Scientology was causing rifts in their perfect marriage. Kidman was visibly head over heels for Cruise. In an interview with People, she said, “I fell madly, passionately in love. I was reeling with Tom. I would have gone to the ends of the earth for him.”

After 11 years of marriage, the duo separated in 2001. Cruise and Kidman had adopted two children during their marriage, Isabella and Connor. Through the years, not only did Kidman lose her husband, but she also lost her kids. Things were so serious that years later, she was banned from her own son's wedding by Cruise.

A source told Radar, "First, Tom would never even consider inviting Nicole to Connor’s wedding because she’s considered a 'suppressive person' by the church — and, second, he doesn’t want her there. Tom turned his back on Nicole a long time ago and he’s never looked back."

Kidman's relationship with her children turned sour over the years and when Cruise asked Connor to bar his mother from attending his wedding, he did not question. “Connor worships the ground his father walks on and would never disobey Tom,” said the source. "Tom is behind this and what he wants is as good as law,” the insider added and continued, "Tom made the call and Connor followed."

According to Standard UK, on the Church of Scientology's website a person is labeled as a "suppressive person" so that "others will know not to associate with them."
One of the main reasons for the kids to grow distant from their mother was their introduction to Scientology following the divorce.

The Mercury News once quoted the Eyes Wide Shut actress saying, "My kids don’t call me mommy, they don’t even call me mom. They call me Nicole, which I hate and tell them off for it." There were speculations thrown around about the children following Scientology by choice or force.

Cruise, who is the poster boy of Scientology, did not wait too long to make his kids walk down his path. Sam Domingo, a former member of the group revealed the techniques that were used on Isabella and Connor. She mingled with the group's famous figures, including Cruise and his children before her departure.

She told Daily Mail, "Isabella's being used for PR, she's Tom Cruise's kid, it's not fair what they're doing to her and Connor. They have no choice but to be the poster kids of Scientology now."

She was witness to the sudden change in things after Cruise and Kidman's divorce. Isabella and Connor were no longer allowed to play with their childhood friends.

She said, "I know what techniques they used... I know what the second-in-command at the time Marty Rathbun did, he was so tough on them, the Cruise kids had no choice. After the divorce, they were indoctrinated into Scientology and very much isolated."

Kidman, on the other hand, has been very discreet about her opinions on Isabella and Connor, and their decisions. Currently married to musician Keith Urban, she's a mother to two daughters, Sunday Rose, 12, and Faith Margaret, 9. She once opened up and said that both Isabella and Conner were old enough to make their own decisions and being a mother, she accepted all of them.

"They are adults. They are able to make their own decisions. They have made choices to be Scientologists and as a mother, it’s my job to love them," she told Who Magazine. "And I am an example of that tolerance and that’s what I believe—that no matter what your child does, the child has love and the child has to know there is available love and I’m open here."

The Jerry McGuire star has another daughter, Suri, with his ex-wife Katie Holmes. After the two tied the knot in 2006, Holmes took the decision of converting her religion to Scientology, like Cruise, but eventually left. Just like it happened in Kidman's case, her husband's religion was taking over their personal lives. Suri was only six when the pair got divorced. Cruise hasn't met his daughter since she was six years old.
