The 'Batman Begins' actress had dreamed of marrying the 'Top Gun' actor since she was a young girl but when she finally got her wish, it turned out out to be different from what she'd imagined.
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes were once so madly in love that the Top Gun actor jumped up and down on a couch while on Oprah Winfrey's talk show in 2005 out of sheer ecstasy. Despite a 16-year age gap between the two, Cruise and the Batman Begins actress started dating in April 2005. For her, dating her childhood hero was like a dream come true but that dream came crashing down eventually.
The Dawson's Creek actress, who grew up in Toledo, Ohio, said in an interview once that she had a crush on Cruise when she was young. According to the Hollywood Reporter, she also said, "I think every little girl dreams about (her wedding). I used to think I was going to marry Tom Cruise." She finally met her childhood crush in April 2005 for a role in Mission: Impossible 3. While that didn't materialize, their relationship did. They confirmed that they were dating when they showed up in Rome together for a public event.
During a 2005 episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show, the Mission Impossible actor not only jumped on the couch but also pulled Holmes out from the backstage. What ensued was a whirlwind romance that culminated in them getting married in a lavish wedding in Italy in November 2016. They had their first and only child, Suri, on April 18, 2006. The actress had converted to Scientology, the religion ardently followed by Cruise, but she left the religion eventually. In 2012, Holmes, who was Cruise's third wife, filed for divorce.
In a statement to the media, Holmes' attorney called it "a private matter" and that her primary concern is "her daughter's best interest." Cruise's rep offered that the actor is "deeply saddened" about the news and is "concentrating on his three children."
Three years after the Mad Money actress filed for divorce, it was reported that the former couple's ties were so severed that they don't even speak to each other anymore. They had not spoken to each other even for the sake of their daughter, whom Cruise reportedly hasn't met since the divorce. The 41-year-old actress is reportedly dissatisfied with her former husband's lack of involvement in their daughter's life, as per Mirror UK.
While she didn't speak about their divorce, she revealed about her state of mind after it to InStyle. "That time was intense. It was a lot of attention, and I had a little child on top of it.
We had some funny moments out and about in public. So many people I didn’t know became my friends and helped us out. There was one incredible moment when I think I actually cried," she went on.
"Suri was six or seven, and she was spending the night at a friend’s house while I was seeing the ballet at Lincoln Center. At 10 o’clock I got a call: 'Mommy, can you come get me?' I got a cab and went down to Battery Park to pick her up. She was exhausted. She fell asleep on the way home, and when we pulled up to our building, the cab driver opened the door and helped me not wake her. He helped carry her to the building. He was so kind," she added.
She also revealed that there were times when she didn't even want to get out of the house. "As a public person, I've gotten a lot of attention at different periods in my life. And when you have a lot of attention, sometimes you don't want to leave the house because it's just too much. You can get consumed by what people think, but suddenly you just decide to do things on your own terms. I feel like I'm finally figuring that out."
As a mother, her primary concern now is her daughter's welfare and she reportedly doesn't date anyone who wouldn't be available to involve her daughter in his life. She dated Django Unchained actor Jamie Foxx for several years before they split in 2019. The number of paparazzi who hound her and her daughter has been a matter of worry for this single mom.
"I have to say, I did recently see some fansite [about Suri] posted when she was a baby, and it was very intense. We were followed a lot when she was little. I just wanted her outside, so I would walk her around to find parks at, like, six in the morning when nobody would see us. But there’s one video where I’m holding her — she was two at the time — and she starts waving at the cameras. She’s pretty special," she said.
