The babies were born on different dates, years, and months.
Like many pairs of twins, Alfredo and Aylin were born 15 minutes apart. But what makes their birth story unique is that while one twin was born in 2021, the other sibling was born in 2022.
Fatima Madrigal and Robert Trujillo of Greenfield welcomed a son named Alfredo into the world on New Year's Eve on Friday. 15 minutes later, right when the clock struck midnight, the couple welcomed Alfredo's twin sister, named Aylin, on New Year's Day, according to PEOPLE. Aylin was born weighing 5 lbs., 14 oz., while big brother Alfredo weighed 6 lbs., 1 oz.
To be clear, in this rare case, the twins were born on different days, months, and years. How often does that happen?
In a press release from the Natividad Medical Center, the new mom spoke about how she was feeling, with regard to her children's unique birthdays. "It's crazy to me that they are twins and have different birthdays," she said. "I was surprised and happy that she arrived at midnight."
Dr. Ana Abril Arias, a family doctor at the Natividad Medical Group, added, "This was definitely one of the most memorable deliveries of my career. It was an absolute pleasure to help these little ones arrive here safely in 2021 and 2022," she said. "What an amazing way to start the New Year!" Not just that, Aylin is also the area's first baby of 2022.
At midnight, Natividad welcomed Aylin Yolanda Trujillo as the area's first baby of 2022! Her twin, Alfredo Antonio Trujillo, was born 15 minutes earlier at 11:45 pm Friday, Dec. 31, meaning their birthday falls on a different day, month and year— a 1 in 2 million chance! pic.twitter.com/Lm5hkOpNBo

Alfredo and Aylin are the youngest of five siblings, as Madrigal and Trujillo are already parents to two girls and a boy. Madrigal said her oldest son is thrilled to have a brother, and the rest of their family is excited to meet the new additions.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC), there are typically 120,000 twin births every year in the United States. Though these numbers seem huge, these twin births make up just over 3 percent of all births, the organization states.
Twins generally have a lot of stories to share about themselves but for these twins, they sure have an additional unique birthday story to share when they grow up, don't they?
