A mother in White County named Caitlin Mayo got the shock of her life when she found that some dogs from the neighborhood had attacked her kids and mother. Mayo's three kids—Aiden, Declan, and Annsley— were playing as usual on a Sunday afternoon outside Mayo’s mother’s house, when two pitbull mixes charged at them from the neighbor’s house. "I heard a voicemail from her (her mother), grabbed my stuff, and ran and then I had to rush to the hospital," Mayo recalled. "It was scary,” she said, per THV 11.

In a heroic display of courage, the brothers protected their 3-year-old younger sister, Annsley, from getting mauled by the unleashed dogs. "Aiden, told them all to run because he heard the dogs barking," she said. However, one of the brothers, Declan could not escape. "Aiden heard the dogs getting Declan and heard Declan screaming so he ran back, pushed the dogs off of Declan, and told Declan to run," Mayo described.

In a Facebook post, Mayo wrote that "Annsley walked away with literally not a scratch thanks to her brothers." But she worried that her daughter will have PTSD from what she saw. Describing Aiden as "the bravest best big brother ever," the mother said that if not for him, they "would be planning a funeral" for Declan as per the doctors.

Though Declan returned home the same day, the mother said that "he is going to have a lot of healing and recovery to do after his surgery." She described that Declan is going through "a lot of not only physical trauma but emotional as well." She added that "he laid there waiting for the ambulance and he started to go into shock." The boy cried thinking "he was dying" and he told his grandmother "to make sure everyone knows he loves them."

6-year-old Declan talked to Fox 16 KLRT and described his brother as a true hero for saving him from the dogs as well. "I just felt them biting me. I felt like I was frozen. I felt like I was gonna die," he said. As for 10-year-old Aiden, he needed 41 stitches on his body and luckily he made a steady recovery to get released from the hospital. "His left leg, there were 19 total spaces or injuries that they had to sew up his right arm, there was 11 total that had to be sewn up. And then we counted the rest of the big ones that we could remember," Mayo said. "He risked his life to save them," she added about her son.

Jacob Michael Moore has started a GoFundMe in order to help Caitlin and her kids with the medical expenses and wrote, “We had to rush them to ER where Declan had to receive stitches in multiple places all over his body. Aiden has to have surgery as he got the worst of it. These boys are heroes! They were so brave and had it not been for them, their baby sister could have been seriously injured or worse.”

The mother is planning to take legal action against the dog owners and has been told by the authorities that the dogs might get euthanized.
