4 Tested Methods that Can Help Reduce a Double Chin

A double chin is generally associated with weight gain but you needn't necessarily be overweight if you have one. It could be hereditary. But that doesn't mean you cannot get rid of it.

It doesn't matter if you're in your 30s, 40s, or 50s, the double chin can strike any time - even in your 20s! The double chin or submental fat occurs when a layer of fat deposits under the chin. It is generally associated with weight gain but you needn't necessarily be overweight if you have one. It could be in your heredity or you could have loose skin because of aging that has led to fat accumulation.

A double chin is harmless to physical health but some people, who are affected by body image issues, can take it hard when it occurs. But it's important to understand that these are a natural part of your body and nothing worth beating yourself up about. However, if you feel inclined towards taking action to beat your double chin, here are four effective methods to try:

1. Exercises for the double chin

There are multiple exercises recommended by the Healthline that are easy to do and take very little time. Here are six that can be done while sitting at the table at work.

Straight jaw jut

Tilt your head back and push the lower jaw forward until you feel the stretch in your chin. Hold the position for 10 counts, then relax your face and go back to the initial position.

Ball exercise

Take a 9-to-10-inch ball and place it under your chin. Put pressure on the ball with your chin. Repeat this 25 times a day.

Pucker up

Tilt your head back, pucker your lips until you feel the stretch under your chin for 10 counts and then return to the original position.

Tongue stretch

Stick your tongue out as far as you can while looking straight ahead. Raise your tongue towards your nose and hold for 10 seconds before relaxing.

Neck stretch

Tilt the head backward and touch the roof of your mouth with the tip of your tongue. Hold the position for 10 seconds before relaxing.

Bottom jaw jut

Tilt your head backward and turn right. Stretch out the lower jaw and hold for 10 seconds, then repeat on the left.

2. Change your diet

You can opt for a diet rich in natural products and raw food if the double chin happened because of weight gain. You can start out by keeping a diary to find out how many calories you are eating and shave off a few each day. Drink a lot of water since it removes fat and toxins. You can also opt for water-rich foods like melons and cucumbers, according to Medical News Today

3. Face masks

There are many products in the market that help tighten the skin, which in turn reduces the double chin. Try glycerin masks and coffee or green tea masks along with exercises. You can also try a mask made of egg whites, honey, and lemon juice.

4. Clinical treatments

There are invasive, clinical treatments also available for double chin. You could try Mesotherapy, in which compounds are injected to dissolve fat. The cons of doing this process is that will take several months and multiple injections. If it's not done properly, it can cause nerve damage. Another way is Liposculpture, in which suction or laser is used to remove the fat. It doesn't create elasticity but removes the existing fat. The third method is Kybella, a drug approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). For this process, 50 injections are injected into the fat tissues during multiple sessions.

In case, the double chin is not genetic for you and you really want to get rid of it, try weight loss, cardio and chin exercises before opting for an invasive procedure.
