Women Shared The "Red Flags" They Brushed off in Their Relationships Which Actually Turned out to Be Toxic

Partners unconsciously send up some red flags that indicate the kind of person they are, especially if they're toxic.

When you get into a relationship, you do so with the expectation and hope that there will be mutual love, respect, commitment, and trust between you and your partner. However, sometimes, our partner's true colors start to come out and while it may not be too obvious at the start, slowly, certain phrases and behaviors stand out and not in a good way. Dr Lillian Glass, a California-based communication and psychology expert, defines a toxic relationship as “any relationship [between people who] don’t support each other, where there’s conflict and one seeks to undermine the other, where there’s competition, where there’s disrespect and a lack of cohesiveness.”

And it's small actions that can be your warning signs. Whether it's your partner trying to control how much you meet your friends or disguise insults as compliments, you may brush it off in the beginning but later on, realize just how toxic such behavior is. For a lot of you, it can leave you with scars that remain for a long time. One Twitter user named Halima decided to ask her followers what signs they saw that were "red flags" of a toxic relationship that they should have noticed before.

Here are the responses from various women:

1. One of the most common signs is gaslighting

2. A healthy relationship requires both partners to communicate with each other

3. Love doesn't lessen the impact of an insult

4. A toxic partner is one who tries to isolate you

5. It isn't healthy when a partner dismisses your likes, dislikes, ideas, friends, and everything that make you, you

6. Once again, communication and effort are key points

7. No one deserves to be gaslighted

8. A toxic partner likes to remain in control all the time

9. A true and loving partner will put the same effort into the relationship as you

11. You shouldn't ever have to "settle" for less than what you require from your partner

12. Don't ignore the signs of manipulation

13. When there are so many signs, don't wait for it to get worse

14. A man who cares for you will not play games with you

15. When all he sees is your flaws, you know it's a sign to leave

16. One of the basic foundations of a healthy relationship is trust

17. When you are constantly told how inadequate you are, you might eventually start believing in it

18. When he cheats but puts the blame on you for feeling bad
