According to 11Live, on November 4, Douglas Country Sheriff's deputies received a call from Lithia Springs, Ga., and when they reached the spot they found Lyons's body. Officials said that she died from "blunt force trauma" and suffered injuries to her face.
Immediately, police started searching for her former boyfriend Harold Dakers. He was out on bond for a case associated with Lyons. Four months ago, Dakers was arrested and charged with rape and aggravated assault on Lyons at his apartment in Villa Rica.
On November 8, police got a tip that he was entering a wooden area in the neighborhood of Villa Rica. Police soon spotted him but he went out of sight. They then heard a gunshot and found Dakers lying in the creek with a self-inflicted injury, as reported by PEOPLE.
When Dakers was arrested and charged with rape and aggravated assault on Lyons, the officers were first informed about the incident on June 19, 2022. During the investigation, Detective Weingarten found that Lyson was choked to the point of unconsciousness and Dackers was demanding the passcodes for her phone. Then he forced himself on her before he allowed her to leave. He was later arrested and released on bond.
However, the Coweta County District Attorney’s Office said their team had argued against giving Dakers a bond. The DA's office said once they knew the bond would be granted by the judge, they asked for Dakers to wear an ankle monitor. The judge refused any electronic monitoring of Dakers. The District Attorney’s Office said the victim, who has now been identified as Lyons, wrote a letter that was presented by Dakers' defense team, stating she didn’t oppose the judge giving Dakers bond.
Lyons's family conducted the memorial service on November 18, after raising funds on GoFundMe. "Kaleshia Lyons was brutally murdered Friday, November 4th, by the father of her child, who then proceeded to take his own life, leaving their child, Gavin, without both of his parents. Kaleshia was a beautiful soul and wonderful mother taken from this world far too soon. This fundraiser supports Kaleshia's family with costs associated with her funeral, burial, and care for Gavin," wrote a family friend.
