Grace Victory confirmed via Twitter that she had woken up from her coma but no further updates were given on her health condition.
British YouTuber Grace Victory has finally woken up after spending three months in a medically-induced coma. The 30-year-old had given birth to a baby boy on Christmas Day while she had coronavirus, before going into a medically-induced coma the day after. The YouTuber herself confirmed the news with a short tweet — "I'm awake." She followed this up with an update on her baby, writing, "Baby boy is thriving at home."
Victory had contracted the virus in mid-December when she was pregnant with the child and was forced to deliver the baby two months early due to respiratory issues, and was moved into the intensive care unit, reported Today. She shares the baby with boyfriend Lee “LPW” Williams. Her fans and loved ones celebrated the development with sweet messages to her posts on Instagram and Twitter.
The Vlogger, also referred to as The Internet's Big Sister, joined YouTube in 2011 and has more than 221,000 subscribers on her channel. Victory is known for her posts on body positivity and pregnancy, according to the BBC. While her symptoms of coronavirus were initially mild, they worsened around mid-December, forcing doctors to take the decision to deliver the baby prematurely as she was too unwell to carry on with the pregnancy, updated the family in an Instagram post on her account.
"Grace was admitted to intensive care on Christmas Day due to issues with her breathing and therefore they had to make the decision of placing her into an induced coma, to give her body the rest it needs, in order to recover," wrote the family. "She's currently stable but please keep her in your thoughts and prayers." At the time, her family said she was “currently stable,” before adding that the baby was “doing well.”

Victory's sister Charleigh wrote an emotional tribute about her before asking her Instagram followers to pray for her health. "I pray that when I wake up, this nightmare will be over and Grace will wake up with me and be home. I know she had to do this, SHE knows she had to do this, she just needs this time to rest, so she comes back stronger and fighting fit," wrote Charleigh. "She’s been given new superpowers as she’s a mama now 🙌🏽🥺, her ultimate dream come true and her son (who is absolutely unbelievable 🥰) really, really needs his mummy."
On March 8, Charleigh confirmed that her sister had woken up but was still in the hospital. "There are absolutely no words, other than Thank. You. God!! Let's keep rooting for @gracefvictory until the day she's home, with her baby on her chest and an oat milk chai latter in her hand," wrote Charleigh. There has been no other update on her condition apart from the news that she has woken up from her coma or when she will be able to leave the hospital.
Contracting coronavirus while pregnant increases the risk of severe illness in the mother, including the need for ICU admission or a ventilator and adverse pregnancy outcomes, including preterm deliveries and stillbirth, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC also states that there's very little evidence suggesting that babies risk getting Coronavirus from their mother who had the virus during pregnancy. Mothers are advised to wash hands and wear a mask while sharing a room with a newborn.
The coronavirus vaccine is available to pregnant women but former CDC acting director Dr. Richard Besser said they should weigh their risk of exposure before deciding to get vaccinated. “If you’re in a situation where you have a high likelihood of being exposed to Coronavirus, then vaccination is something you should consider because science is suggesting that it’s safe,” said Besser. “There’s nothing about the vaccines that have been licensed so far that raise any red flags.”
